I am not sure who thought it would be a good idea to create a fighting game where the entire cast is both female and under eighteen, but Japanese players sure do enjoy it. Apparently, the market over there is hungry for overly fetishist moé-blobs and combos that last longer than the average round in some fighting games (to be fair, the sequels do cut down on the combo length).

Yes, people at the Northeast Championships will play anything. The sequel is actually a very solid fighting game (just do not play the PS2 port! It’s beyond horrific), but I can not see it gaining traction in the United States where people like their fighting games full of MANLY MEN doing MANLY THINGS — and then I’m told Melty Blood, another fighter heavy on the female characters and moé burn, is the third biggest tournament at NEC, according to pre-registrations. Who knows.

In this footage, you have Justin Wong (WTF, does this guy play everything?), HeartNana (SBO 2009 qualifier for Blaz Blue), Sabin (top SF4 player), and some guy named Andre (who??? — OK, he’s actually one of the more notable SF4 players on the east coast, even though nobody knows who he is).

More videos below the fold, as usual.

It’s kind of amusing to see the jump in quality in licensed games between a decade or two ago and now. Back in the day, if the game was based off of some movie or comic book or something of that sort, you almost knew it had to be awful. Couple that with a console-only fighting game (which was nearly unheard of at the time of this game’s release), and you would think that would be a recipe for disaster.

…and you would be right, half the time — do not play the Genesis version, as it is awful. The SNES version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters is surprisingly good, though — and there are some people who have been figuring out new tactics over a decade after the original game came out.

These are match videos from NEC8 in 2007, and feature such top players as Sabin (SF4), Zar the Biscuit (MBAA) and JeRon (anything from the 90s).

More videos below the fold. If you really feel the need for more TMNT:TF videos, you can check out Zar’s Youtube channel (you can pay him in Aoko doujins).

One of the things I would like to do in the run-up to NECX is to post up match videos from tournaments of prior NEC events. The first one here is from one of the best and worst fighting games you will ever play, Fighter’s History Dynamite. This is from the grand finals last year, with Justin Wong vs. d’nyc3. Basically, Justin earfs a fool playing Karnov, and this game looks like someone designed Super Turbo in bizarro land.
