The event is so close, and yet, so far (well in my case it really is far — about 2,500 miles. I hate flying — then again, who doesn’t?) With that, more updates:

  • The hotel block for the event has been sold out… but Eric managed to grab some more rooms that became available anyway. The discount is no longer available after Wednesday (that would be tomorrow!), so if you have been waiting all this time to book a room, you are about to run out of time.
  • If you are driving to the event and are parking at the hotel, you will need to pay for the parking. It is $7 a day and is on a ticketed system, so you can leave and re-park as necessary. Just remember to bring a little extra cash if you are driving.
  • Just as a heads-up, Blaz Blue teams have been moved to Sunday.
  • Other schedule changes: the Blaz Blue 1v1 tournament starts at 12:30 PM on Saturday, with Guilty Gear teams starting at 3:30 PM on Saturday with the 1v1 tournament to follow the end of the team tournament.

Some updates to the event over the last couple of weeks:

  • The special event rate for the hotel has been extended to Sunday, December 6th as well. If you have already booked your room, please call 800-325-3535. You have until November 14th to book a room or change your booking at the special rate.
  • There is going to be at least one other stream at NEC; Hubbs of GVN (who also promotes the Summer Jam and Winter Brawl events in Philly, along with a monthly tournament series) is going to be doing the streaming for 3D fighting games, like Tekken 6 and Virtua Fighter 5.
  • Due to the size of the tournament, Street Fighter 4 will be starting on Saturday and will finish on Sunday.

We are about a month out from the event date, and it already looks like this year will be the biggest and most hype NEC to date.

The tradition of the Northeast Championships being the player’s major continues, as a new game has been added to the main line-up. Honestly, it is a bit of a surprise to me — but the person running the tournament is serious about it, and is willing to add a significant bonus to the pot for the tournament. Tom Brady (the infamous Dead or Alive and Mortal Kombat player, not the quarterback) is running the tournament and adding $500 to the pot.

Here are the vitals: the tournament is going to be held on the PS3 version and will start at 4 PM (what day?). Here are the rules:

  • Flash and Superman infinites are BANNED. using those infinites will result in a forfeit for that round.
  • Superman gets 1 free move after dd4*1+2 but it cannot be another promove ground pound. Doing so will cause the player to forfeit the round.
  • Flash reset is LEGAL but only 1 reset in the combo is allowed. if 2 resets are done then its considered a semi-infinite and you forfeit the round.
  • Breaker combos are legal.
  • Guaranteed hits/combos off of the unblockable rage activation are legal.
  • Instant kill glitch BANNED. using it results in a forfeit for that MATCH.
  • ALL characters are legal.
  • Random stages are always used.
  • Default button config.

One thing I had heard from people who went to Summer Jam (which was hosted at the exact same location) that there really is nowhere close to eat. Let’s take a quick look at that:

There is a Burger King and a Subway about a mile and a third north on Island Ave., and there are a fair number of other locations nearby (as noted by the dots on the map). Now given that an average person walks at around 3.3 MPH and that there are multiple roads that would have to be crossed, walking out there would be possible as it would take about 20 minutes but probably would not be a great idea, especially during winter in South Philly. As a point of reference, the walk from America’s Best Inn (the old location) to Checker’s (which is kind of infamous for people who have been to NEC in the past) was 4/10s of a mile; less than a third of the distance here.

Ugh. I hope you all like delivery pizza and Chinese food, or know someone with a car.

One more thing: Big Eric (the tournament director and organizer) is holding a canned food drive during the tournament, to go to those less fortunate in the greater Philadelphia area. He is looking for donations for any canned or non-perishable food; hopefully the community can show that we do more than just push buttons all day, every day.

He’s also looking for donations for liquor, but that would be just going to him. :V

I figure the site is a bit late considering the event is in about six weeks, but better late than never.

The back-end for registration and pre-payment is still under construction; for now you can sign up on one of the community sites (there’s a handy link on the registration page). That will come online as soon as possible.

Beyond that, players just need to get ready to bring their skills as this event looks like it is going to be massive and people are going to be hungry (and not just because there is no food nearby ;_;).
