First off, there is a trailer available for NEC XII done by John Cosentino of KaziGrfx, highlighting some of the new things coming to the event this year. This includs the first Soul Calibur 5 tournament in America and the first post-release Tekken Tag Tournament 2 in America.

Furthermore, there seems to be a lot of games that will have either their first major tournament on their current version in the US or the last major tournament on their current version. Check out the list:

Games/versions that will be making their first appearance (post-release, with the exception of Soul Calibur 5) at a major tournament in the US:

  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
  • King of Fighters XIII
  • Soul Calibur 5
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2
There are also several games that will be having their last apperance at a major tournament in the US, as new versions are immimient:
  • Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition (the ver.2012 update comes out on consoles the week after NEC)
  • BlazBlue: Continuum Shift 2 (the PS3/X360 version of BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend is due in December)
  • Melty Blood: Actress Again (the PC version of Melty Blood: Current Code is scheduled for release in late December)
It’s really surprising how many games are going to get revised right before or right after NEC. It’s a testament of how healthy the genre is, with the marketplace and the communities at large being able to support so many games.

YouTube user PsychoChronic plumbed the depths of the community history and found some interviews conducted at NEC 3 from the DVD of the tournament, which took place nearly eight years ago. Marvel at some of the wonders of the past, including:

  • How much younger everyone looked then.
  • How did a Japanese player (Ino) actually come to NEC.
  • How Arturo Sanchez is just as salty eight years ago as he his now.

The event is so close, and yet, so far (well in my case it really is far — about 2,500 miles. I hate flying — then again, who doesn’t?) With that, more updates:

  • The hotel block for the event has been sold out… but Eric managed to grab some more rooms that became available anyway. The discount is no longer available after Wednesday (that would be tomorrow!), so if you have been waiting all this time to book a room, you are about to run out of time.
  • If you are driving to the event and are parking at the hotel, you will need to pay for the parking. It is $7 a day and is on a ticketed system, so you can leave and re-park as necessary. Just remember to bring a little extra cash if you are driving.
  • Just as a heads-up, Blaz Blue teams have been moved to Sunday.
  • Other schedule changes: the Blaz Blue 1v1 tournament starts at 12:30 PM on Saturday, with Guilty Gear teams starting at 3:30 PM on Saturday with the 1v1 tournament to follow the end of the team tournament.

I am not sure who thought it would be a good idea to create a fighting game where the entire cast is both female and under eighteen, but Japanese players sure do enjoy it. Apparently, the market over there is hungry for overly fetishist moé-blobs and combos that last longer than the average round in some fighting games (to be fair, the sequels do cut down on the combo length).

Yes, people at the Northeast Championships will play anything. The sequel is actually a very solid fighting game (just do not play the PS2 port! It’s beyond horrific), but I can not see it gaining traction in the United States where people like their fighting games full of MANLY MEN doing MANLY THINGS — and then I’m told Melty Blood, another fighter heavy on the female characters and moé burn, is the third biggest tournament at NEC, according to pre-registrations. Who knows.

In this footage, you have Justin Wong (WTF, does this guy play everything?), HeartNana (SBO 2009 qualifier for Blaz Blue), Sabin (top SF4 player), and some guy named Andre (who??? — OK, he’s actually one of the more notable SF4 players on the east coast, even though nobody knows who he is).

More videos below the fold, as usual.

Some updates to the event over the last couple of weeks:

  • The special event rate for the hotel has been extended to Sunday, December 6th as well. If you have already booked your room, please call 800-325-3535. You have until November 14th to book a room or change your booking at the special rate.
  • There is going to be at least one other stream at NEC; Hubbs of GVN (who also promotes the Summer Jam and Winter Brawl events in Philly, along with a monthly tournament series) is going to be doing the streaming for 3D fighting games, like Tekken 6 and Virtua Fighter 5.
  • Due to the size of the tournament, Street Fighter 4 will be starting on Saturday and will finish on Sunday.

We are about a month out from the event date, and it already looks like this year will be the biggest and most hype NEC to date.
